As the final semester project, Inquiry03 asked Advanced Architectural Studio I students at Arizona State University to design an adaptive reuse project in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. The site lays adjacent to downtown Phoenix and the rapidly gentrifying Warehouse district. An interesting challenge is posed by the site, which contains the abandoned Phoenix Union Station, historic AT&SF Frieght Depot, and a much larger parking garage.

Given our choice of program, I opted to design a new home for the ASU Design School. The new facility’s crowning feature is its dynamic facade, but the building’s adaptive reuse will serve as a useful learning tool for students of architecture and interior design preserving the historic shell of the freight depot, strategically modifying a parking structure, and adding the new Dynamic Teeth Façade System that I designed in Inquiry02.

The form of the new design is derived based on site constraints, with an atrium cut from an existing bay of the parking structure (preventing the need of column removal), a new wing utilizing the vertical space above the AT&SF Freight Depot, and corners cut to better suit the triangular Dynamic Teeth Façade System.
